IPL vs Fractional Laser: Start with the Concern

Why colour concerns and texture concerns lead to different laser and light conversations.

Treatment room and equipment inside PurBliss MediSpa

IPL, Frax 1550 and Nd:YAG can appear together in a clinic menu, yet they describe different technologies. PurBliss offers these options through its Nordlys appointments and also lists Aerolase Neo Elite. A useful comparison begins with what is being assessed, then asks why a particular device is proposed.

Know the words in the menu

IPL is intense pulsed light, using filtered broad-spectrum light. Frax 1550 is a non-ablative fractional laser. Nd:YAG identifies a laser type used in several contexts. Candela describes Nordlys as a platform that can support these different technologies.

A platform’s capabilities do not establish which handpiece will be used at your appointment. Ask for the exact procedure, device and treated area so you can understand the plan.

Colour and surface texture are different starting points

If your concern is a brown mark, redness or visible vessels, the discussion should first establish what the concern is. If you mainly notice an uneven surface or scars, ask how those features will be assessed.

Do not diagnose a mark based on a photograph or its colour alone. New, changing or unexplained lesions may need medical evaluation before a cosmetic procedure. The provider should explain the boundary between diagnosis and appearance-focused treatment.

Ask how skin and timing affect the plan

Skin tone, tanning, medication and prior responses can influence laser suitability. The exact target and device settings also matter. Tell the provider about recent or planned sun exposure and any history of lasting pigment changes.

Then discuss the recovery window for the actual procedure. The broad label ‘laser facial’ is not enough to decide whether you can schedule it just before an event or sunny holiday.

  • What is being targeted?
  • Why this handpiece and setting approach?
  • What alternatives fit my skin?
  • What changes and precautions should I expect afterwards?

Compare like-for-like costs

The live PurBliss menu reviewed October 10, 2026 lists an IPL appointment at $300 and Frax laser at $500. IPL hands and décolletage are separate formats with their own fees. The number of proposed visits and scope may differ.

Ask whether the quote covers the entire area, whether more than one modality is proposed and how progress will be reviewed. An IPL appointment and a fractional resurfacing appointment should not be treated as identical purchases.

Plan one clear next step

You can arrive for consultation with a preferred technology, but leave room for a different recommendation. Ask for the reasoning in plain language and take time to weigh the likely benefit, risk and commitment.

If a combination is proposed, ask why each component is included and how the added steps affect preparation, cost and recovery. Availability of several devices is useful only when the choice is well explained.

Questions & answers

Is IPL a laser?

IPL is a different light technology. Ask which exact device and handpiece will be used, rather than relying on a general laser label.

Can one procedure address every redness or pigment concern?

No. The cause, skin and target matter. Diagnosis and suitability come before selecting a cosmetic treatment.

Should I choose Frax because it is more expensive?

Choose based on the concern and assessment. A different fee does not establish that one procedure is more appropriate.

Why is the device and handpiece name useful when comparing a light-based appointment?

A clinic may offer more than one technology through related booking categories. Recording the exact proposed device, handpiece and area helps you connect the quote, consent discussion and aftercare instructions to the same procedure.

How can I describe colour and texture goals without diagnosing my own skin?

Explain what you see, where it appears, when you noticed it and whether it has changed. You can say that colour or surface texture is your priority without assigning it a medical label. Ask what needs assessment before a cosmetic option is considered.
